The State University of New York Maritime College — which is the first maritime school in the country to be approved by the federal government — was established in 1874 to train and educate students who want to venture into the nautical paths.

At first, the institution was intended to boost the maritime economy, which had suffered during the American Civil War.

Currently, U.S. Coast Guard Licensing is also one of the degrees in the college’s offerings.
